The Rec Room launched at St Luke’s, Hoylake, in June 2015 as a free, open youth club for years 6 through to 13. The young people can come and play pool, table tennis, computer games, giant jenga, football, volleyball, bench ball and many more games, as well as the opportunity to paint their nails or just chill out with their friends and enjoy the at-cost tuck shop.
We have an average attendance of ten young people each week but have engaged with over 20 in less than a year, the majority of whom weren’t involved in St. Luke’s in any way before the launch of the youth club.
Two siblings started attending The Rec Room and we saw their family attend St. Luke’s services over the Christmas period, and continue since the turn of the new year. One of them now attends our Sunday evening youth group, Youthie, which is centred around teaching young people about Jesus and how He can impact their lives. Their father has also attended one of the men’s group evenings which started in January.
This is just one good news story of how an open youth club with no Christian teachings can be the start of something great for a whole family and help drew new members into the life of the church. – Matt Teale, Youth Worker
