The Beacon, Heswall, is the culmination of a seventeen-year-old dream, brought to fruition by a former minister and a dedicated group of church members, with donations of time, money and equipment. The Beacon café reaches out into all areas of our community, not only serving delicious home-made food (Fairtrade where possible), but most importantly providing a warm welcome, and caring volunteer staff, with a strong emphasis on pastoral care.
It is a gem of a place, open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10.30 am to 2pm for coffees and light lunches, and every Saturday morning for coffee. At the end of each year any profit is given to charities at home and abroad; so far we have been able to donate well over £50,000.
The venture has proved very successful, and following the refurbishment of the Church premises the brave decision was taken to raise further money to extend and modernise the Beacon to what it is today. We are now most fortunate to have a fantastic facility in which engage with the local community.
On Monday mornings a Friendship Club is run when elderly, and sometimes lonely, people are transported by Helplink from home to the Beacon, to share a soup and sandwich lunch. They really benefit from the friendship and companionship they experience.
Our latest venture in conjunction with Churches Together in Heswall and the Rotary Club has been the opening of Cafe Connect every Thursday from 2pm – 4pm. The Beacon provides a setting where those with dementia and their carers can enjoy a relaxing time, with activities and companionship. a time and space to share memories. We have a great team of volunteers for this project from churches throughout the area.
On Sunday mornings we welcome a growing group of young people to IMPACT, A Christian Youth Group for 11-14 young people who wish to know more about the Christian faith, with fun, games and refreshments. This is an initiative by Heswall Parish for young people of all denominations
We are constantly looking for more new and exciting ways to develop the use of the Beacon within the community: the work goes on. – Marjorie Griffiths
